THEOPHILE-ALEXANDRE STEINLEN (1859-1923) [RACAHOUT DES ARABES.] 1905. Artist's proof in olive green.
23 1/2x18 1/2 inches, 57x60 cm.
Condition B+ / B: repaired tears, creases and abrasions in margins and image; restored losses in margins and corners; mat stain in margin. Paper.
"In 1905, ten years after Le Lait de la Vingeanne [Lait pur Sterilise] and Cie. Francaises des Thes et Chocolats, Steinlen revisits one of his favorite subjects [his daughter]. Little known, this poster of a very high quality, demonstrates an evolution of his style, especially the delicate modeling of the faces" (Bargiel p. 72). In fact Steinlen's style here is more in keeping with cabinet prints as opposed to the graphic art of posters. Crauzat cites 12 proofs of the image without text were pulled in black and in color, but there is no mention of an olive proof, suggesting that this is a very rare trial-proof. Crauzat 512 1 (var), Bargiel 46 (var), Health 156.
